  Chapter One

Triss Long blamed bone deep exhaustion for turning a bad day into a horrible evening. If she had finished her edits earlier there would have been no reason for her to still be cleaning the condo at nine in the evening. There would have been no reason for her to be rushing to get out of the place. In such a hurry that she overfilled her arms with cleaning supplies and junk to the point that she couldn’t see her feet, or the slightly raised lip of the threshold that tripped her.

She was able to save herself from a nasty spill. But she wasn’t able to save the jumble of bottles, boxes, and bags she’d been carting from dropping onto the concrete breezeway. The clatter and noise echoed in the quiet hall, interrupting a particularly intimate scene she could have avoided if she’d been paying more attention to her surroundings rather than a fast exit.

“Oh my gosh. I am so sorry,” she stammered out her apology. She dropped to her knees and scrambled to collect the scattered items. She was all too aware of the couple’s scrutiny, and hyperaware of the man watching her.

It wasn’t hard to recognize who he was. Even if Triss didn’t know his name, she’d caught glimpses of him from her apartment across the street. Her friend Jynn described it more as spying, but Triss shook off the thought and kept grabbing for the spilled supplies.

The woman kicked one of the bottles that had come to rest next to her foot. She sneered down at Triss. “Stupid cow. You’d better pray you didn’t ruin my Pradas.”

Triss bit her tongue to hold back the response that came to mind. If she just kept quiet and got the crap picked up, she’d be able to get away faster. No sense in engaging the bitch in front of him.

“Don’t be a bitch, Angelina. It was an accident.” The man’s voice was firm.

Angelina stamped one of her overpriced pumps. Triss pulled her hand and the bag of dirty dust rags out of range and peeked up to catch the petulant look on Angelina’s face. She would have looked a lot prettier without the pinched lips and snotty attitude.

“I’ll be whatever I want. These aren’t knock offs. They’re genuine Pradas and if they’re damaged--”

The man ignored her and bent to retrieve one of the bottles that had bounced against his foot. “You’re not going to do anything, Ange, except shut up.”

Triss saw Angelina’s lips thin as she glared down at the man then tried to skewer Triss with her green eyes. Triss dropped her attention to her task before she lost control of the laughter building inside. Damn, the man knew how to put a person in their place, which only made him more appealing.

With nearly all the supplies haphazardly collected into her arms, Triss held her hand out for the bottle the man offered. The apology she was going to repeat froze on her lips. There was no doubt in her mind that her eyes were probably the size of dinner plates as she got her first real look at him.

  Up close and personal.

Even in the dimly lit hall, she could see how vibrant a blue his eyes were. The laugh lines at the corners reinforced the humor lighting his gaze. His face was handsome, not pretty. Square jaw, kissable lips with the lower lip slightly fuller than the upper. His dark hair hung in loose waves past his shoulders. Her fingers tingled with the desire to tangle themselves in the ebony locks framing his face.

“For God’s sake, Vince, I don’t do ménages with women.”

Angelina’s abrasive tone brought Triss thudding back to reality. She looked at Angelina, really looked at her. The word ménage was enough to have her snatch the bottle from the man, and hightail it back into the condo she’d just cleaned. She had the door slammed and locked before taking a single breath.

“Oh my God.” Triss fought to steady her racing heart even as she set the supplies down on the entry floor. With the blood pounding in her ears and her mind spinning, she turned back to look out the peephole. The fisheye lens didn’t give her a very good image, but it was enough to confirm that she’d actually seen what she’d seen.

“Vince,” she whispered, liking the feel of his name on her lips. He appeared as nice as his voice sounded. Tall, long dark hair, black slacks loose enough to hint at the muscles in his thighs and calves, and a white button-down shirt that emphasized the breadth of his shoulders and didn’t hide the flat plane of his abdomen. Over the shirt and slacks he wore a black leather car coat and neatly polished shoes on his feet. A soft groan left Triss’s lips at the thought of their ignominious introduction.

Mr. Yummy. The guy whose balcony and bedroom were visible from her apartment across the street. Four years of drooling over him from afar and the first impression he got of her was as a stumbling, stammering idiot.

A stumbling, stammering idiot who’d ruined his date.

The woman may have been wearing eight hundred dollar shoes, but she wasn’t wearing very much else. The black leather mini skirt skimmed the middle of her thighs and the black bustier pushed her enhanced breasts up and out. “No one can be that big without a little silicone help. One deep breath and she’s gonna pop outta that thing,” Triss muttered, her face pressed to the door as she continued to watch the pair outside.

There was no indication in the way Vince dressed, but the collar around Angelina’s neck and her clothes were good clues that she liked her sex way beyond vanilla.
Not that leather and collars were true indicators, but the clincher, the solid evidence for Triss that the pair was into kink, was the silk tie binding Angelina’s wrists together.

Already cursed with an overactive imagination, Triss didn’t have any trouble imagining where the night would progress for the couple. Heat filled her cheeks as she recalled the few times she’d spotted Vince with other lovers through the half-closed curtains of his bedroom or the sliding glass doors leading onto his balcony. She squeezed her eyes shut and tried to hold back the moan hovering on her lips as the image of herself, bound and subject to his every command whispered through her mind.

The fantasy was immediately squelched at the thought of her mama’s disapproval. She’d been raised to be a good girl and good girls did not indulge in being tied up and spanked by men, no matter how sexy the men were. With a sigh, she peeked out the security lens again.

“Oops, looks like my interruption has put a pall on tonight’s fun,” she determined.

She couldn’t quite hear the words, but it was clear the woman wasn’t the one saying no as Vince untied her wrists and draped the tie beneath his shirt collar. When the woman stomped down the stairs toward the parking area, Triss turned from the door and bent to collect the cleaning supplies.

It was a sure bet he’d be safely inside his condo soon enough, leaving the landing clear so Triss could make her escape.

The knock on the door startled a yelp from her. She spun back and peeked through the lens. Her shoulders slumped and her forehead met the door with a bit more force than she’d intended.

The look she’d seen on his face, though amused, assured her there would be no getting out until he let her.

  Escape thwarted.

Vince Black let slip a soft chuckle when he heard the muted thud of something hitting the door. It didn’t take any guess work to conclude that she’d hoped he’d left and gone into his home so she could get away.

Not going to happen. He’d watched her face when Ange was being her bitchy best and despite her embarrassment, the woman had controlled the urge to give as good as she got. That kind of control intrigued him. It also stirred the dominant within him.

He tapped on the door again. “The wicked bitch of the West is gone.”

  “Go away.”

Vince laughed. He rested his shoulder against the doorframe. “No. Come on, sweetheart, open the door.”

Her sigh was long and loud through the door before the deadbolt disengaged. The door swung open and the sweetest pair of velvet brown eyes blinked up at him. “I’m sorry I ruined your -- date.”

She had the softest looking mouth he’d ever seen, pink and plump. The desire to lean down and set his mouth over hers was tempting, but nervous tension emanated from her like a radio at full volume. “No problem.”

Straightening away from the doorframe, he held his hand out to her. “Vince Black.”

She hesitated then gripped his hand in a firm handshake. “Triss Long.”

“Did you just move in? I know the unit’s been empty a few weeks, but I hadn’t heard anyone had bought it.” And he would definitely hear, since he owned this and another building in the complex.

“Uh, no. I just clean the empty condos for the managing agency.”

He made a mental note to contact the company on Monday to confirm the information. “Isn’t it a little late to be cleaning?”

“A little, but I was delayed at home and didn’t get a chance to get over here until after five.”

His gaze skimmed her hands. No rings. But to be sure, he asked, “Shouldn’t your husband or boyfriend be here to make sure you’re safe?”

Triss crossed her arms over her chest. The baggy tee shirt she wore definitely hid some lovely assets Vince determined when the stretchy cotton pulled tight over her breasts.

“I’m a big girl and can take excellent care of myself, thank you.”

She was definitely a feisty one, even if the top of her head barely reached his chin. He didn’t doubt she could easily handle any man, but he wondered how well she’d take orders. Vince smiled. “I’m not going to dispute you, sweetheart. It seems a bit late for you to be here by yourself. That’s all.”

Her cheeks went pink as she stared up at him. She uncrossed her arms and tucked her hands into the front pockets of her jeans. “Sorry about that.”

The longer he kept her talking the more he’d learn about her. “You have brothers, don’t you?”

Wispy strands of hair that had come loose from the ponytail at the back of her head, brushed her cheeks as she nodded. “Yes. Two older and two younger.” Her head tilted as she seemed to assess him more carefully. “You have sisters?”

Vince nodded. He’d witnessed and dealt with his share of sisterly indignation enough to recognize it. “Yes. Both younger.”

Silence hovered between them for several seconds before she glanced back into the condo then gave him a sheepish smile. “I, uh, I should really get going.”

Not about to let her get away, Vince motioned her back into the condo. “I understand, it’s getting late. Let me help you with your stuff.”

He could see the cleaning supplies as well as a vacuum cleaner and step ladder in the darkened foyer of the condo. He could also see the protest forming in her face, so he cut it off before she could voice it. “You’ve got way too much stuff to make a single trip. There’s no way my conscience is going to allow me to let you lug all of that by yourself.”

Amusement lifted her lips into a smile that made her eyes glow and turned her pretty face beautiful. “Your manly sense of honor simply won’t allow it, hmmm?”

“Most definitely.” He leaned closer. “Besides, if my dad ever learned I didn’t help a lady, he’d tan my hide.”

Her gaze moved from his face down his body in a leisurely exploration before returning to his face. “Hmm, well, I’d hate to have you get in trouble with your father.” She stepped out of the way and let him move past her.

Vince entered the condo, his sleeve brushing her arm as he stepped around her to gather up the step ladder, vacuum, and one of the larger bags of supplies. He waited for her to put the other supplies into their boxes and bags, before motioning her ahead of him out of the condo. He waited while she locked the door of the condo, then followed her to a dark green SUV in the parking lot.

Once everything was loaded and she closed the rear hatch of her truck, Vince blocked the driver’s door. “Go out with me.”

She blinked, as if surprised he’d asked. “Excuse me?”

Not one to let an opportunity pass when he was interested in a woman, Vince smiled. He kept himself propped against her vehicle’s door while he explained, “You don’t have a husband or a boyfriend, so there’s no reason you can’t go out with me.”

Triss adopted the crossed-arm pose again and shook her head. “Just because I’m not in a relationship doesn’t mean I’ll choose to go out with you.”

“Where’s the harm? You know I help ladies; I have two sisters; and where I live.”

She seemed to think it over for several seconds before shaking her head again. “I really don’t think it’s wise.”

  “Why not?”

Her hands dropped to her hips as she glared up at him. “Let’s just say, our interests aren’t the same.”

Ahh, so she’d seen his tie wrapped around Ange’s wrists. He pushed for a bit more. Would she be brave enough to mention the kink? “How can you know we don’t have any common interests if you’ve never gone out with me?”

An unladylike snort filled the quiet night air. “I don’t need to go out with you to know that we wouldn’t suit.”

Had to admire a woman with an intriguing vocabulary. “Wouldn’t suit? In what way?” Come on, say it, sweetheart.

Those pretty pink lips pinched together and color filled her cheeks. Vince wasn’t surprised when his dick went hard considering the thoughts spinning in his head. Smart and stubborn were a weakness of his. And Triss was both.

  The lon
g drawn in breath and heavy sigh signaled her frustration, but he wasn’t about to let up. “Come one, Triss, in what way don’t you think we’d suit?”

She crossed her arms, pulling the tee shirt tight over her breasts. Vince snuck a quick peek before returning his attention to her face. But a peek was enough to remind him that her soft curves would be a sweet treat in his mouth once he stripped away her clothes. Defenses too.

“How honest do you want me to be, Vince?”

That surprised him. Excited him, too. “Tell me the whole, unvarnished truth. I’m a big boy, I can take it.”

She met his gaze. “I don’t do kink.”

He leaned forward, pushing into her space so they were almost nose to nose. She didn’t budge. “Have you ever tried it?”

She held her ground and tried to look offended. “My mama raised me right, Mr. Black.”

It might have convinced him if he hadn’t noticed the increase in her breathing and the tiny vein pulsing madly at the base of her throat. She was more than interested if he read her right. “Now don’t go getting huffy on me, Treats.”

Surprise speed across her face. A mixture of confusion and annoyance filled her voice. “Treats?”

He didn’t justify or explain himself. “I never said you weren’t a lady. I simply asked if you’d ever played games with your boyfriends.”

She let the nickname slide, but asked, “Don’t you think you’re being a bit personal?”

Vince shrugged. “Maybe. But I still want you to go out with me.”

  Triss rolled her eyes. “No.”

“Then at least give me your number.”

  “Why?”

“So I can try to convince you to take a chance and go out with me.”

A quiet giggle slipped free, but Triss shook her head. “I won’t change my mind.”
